Sunday In-Person Services

Sunday services are now being held in the church at 10 am. (For Sunday Services Covid safety guidelines will be followed: wear masks; sign in when you arrive; and practice social distancing.)

OnLine Video-Taped Services

The Sunday service is being filmed and available online the next day, Monday.

Disciple Bible Study

There will be two Monday Disciple Bible Study Classes.

  • An afternoon class from 1-3 (fellowship hall first week)
  • An evening class from 6-8 (meeting in Tim’s place)

The cost of the book is $43. There are a few places left in each class. The class is open to those who are vaccinated. Contact Joey Olson (teacher) at joeywolson@gmail.com if you are interested in attending.

Noisy Can Offering

The August 29, 2021, Noisy Can Offering will go toward a Sequim Education Foundation grant — Accelerated Reader online reading for 100 fourth grade students. This is a subscription service for students to access books at their instructional level online. It offers the books as well as questions and activities to assist with comprehension. Missions has allocated $500.00, which will purchase licenses for 25 students. The NCO will allow purchasing additional licenses. The amount to fully fund licenses for 100 children is $1,995.00. Should you choose to make a donation, please make a check payable to Sequim TUMC, indicating in the memo section: August NCO. Thank you for your prayerful consideration.

Education Committee Introductory Meeting

Have you considered joining the Education Committee’s team? Would you like to learn more about it first?

Come and meet with us at 11:15 am, after church, in the fellowship hall, on Sunday, September 5th. We will begin to discuss our mission, directions, and ideas together and you can decide if you are interested. We will also determine our meeting times and frequency.

At this time our committee will foster our Adult Education. This already encompasses Trinity U and the various courses offered to foster spiritual and personal growth, biblical understanding, and other needs in our church and community.

As the Education Team, we have work to do to promote the growth of people in our church and community. This is a key part of our Church’s Mission Statement. We need to be Empowered by developing ourselves as people of faith. This makes us better at Welcoming and Serving.

Help for Haiti

United Methodists are working with longtime partners in Haiti to respond after a 7.2-magnitude earthquake and as a major storm approaches. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is collecting donations and working on next steps to help the impoverished country, which also faces political unrest, gang violence, and COVID-19.

United Methodists are reaching out with their prayers and pocketbooks. You may go online to make a donation or write a check to Trinity United Methodist Church and write International Disaster Response and Recovery Advance #982450 on the memo line. The relief arm, part of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries, also is in conversation with partners on the ground about next steps. “In the aftermath of Saturday’s earthquake, we grieve alongside the people of Haiti as the staggering loss of life and level of devastation becomes clear,” said Roland Fernandes, the top executive of Global Ministries and UMCOR.

This event will take place on Saturday, August 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. School supplies will be pre-packaged and distributed in a drive-through format which will begin at the high school stadium parking lot on West Fir St. Volunteers are needed to help direct traffic, backpack distribution, supply sack preparation, supply sack distribution, registration, “other” or “wherever needed.” You can choose time slots that work best for you. Several people from Trinity UMC have helped with this event in the past. If you would like to volunteer this year, you can register by going online to: https://forms.gle/8MGWRyAxbwtiPCah8 .

We are in a Tier 4 Stage from the Conference; unfortunately, that means “Indoor Congregational Singing Under Option 2 TIER 4 – No live singing indoors. Soloists and ensemble groups may gather for the safe recording of music to support online or hybrid worship”. TUMC Missions Ministry has limited funds available to help folks at church and others in our community with necessary home maintenance projects. This might include basic home repairs, yard cleanup, ramps, grab bars, and other in-home needs. One household could receive one grant per year with a maximum limit of up to $500. Confidential requests will go through Lois’s Legacy. Contact Senior Ministries Office 360-683-4307 for further information.

Blood Drive Here at TUMC – August 20 & 21, 11 am to 5 pm

Donating blood is an essential and encouraged activity critical to sustaining community healthcare, especially during emergencies. Your one-hour donation appointment is a safe action to support local hospitals and patients. All donations are conducted in accordance with social distancing guidelines. No walk-ins, guests, or people under age 16 are permitted on site. Masks are required. For questions: schedule@bloodworksnw.org or call 800-398-7888.

Meeting for Disciple Bible Study

There will be a meeting on Sunday, August 22nd for those interested in the class led by Joey Olson. The meeting will start 15 minutes after worship in the sanctuary. At that time, the date and the time for the class will be decided. Joey is requesting that the class be available for those who have been vaccinated. The book for the class is Into the Word, Into the World. It has a green cover and can be ordered from Cokesbury or Amazon.

Boys & Girls Club Summer Lunch Wrap Up – Thank you to our volunteers who have participated in this community outreach through the summer. Over 1500 summer lunches have been distributed out between the 4 offsite locations and the Boys & Girls Club. This community mission program wraps up on Friday the 27 Aug; thank you church!
Food Bank Weekend Food bags – Weekend Food Bags have been distributed throughout the summer each Friday at Carrie Blake Park by a Church Volunteer. This program wraps up on 20 AUG with over 500 Weekend Food Bags going out into the Community through the hands of a TUMC participation; THANK YOU Church!

TUMC member Ken Lillagore to Preach August 15

Ken Lillagore and his wife Gay Lyn moved to Sequim in 2015 from Colorado, where Ken had served as a pastoral assistant and Commissioned Lay Pastor at the Presbyterian Church of Broomfield for five years. They are both retired and have been very active here at TUMC. Ken enjoys photography, hiking and playing his accordion.

Greetings, Church,
I have received many questions this week on “What is a Lay Leader.” Here is a basic overview from our UMC Book of Discipline with a few specifics; hope this helps, and thank you faithful people for the questions.😊

What’s My Job?

Paragraph 251 of our UMC Book of Discipline specifies the role of the Lay Leader of a local church. In part this paragraph states:
“Out of the professing membership of each local church, there shall be elected by the Charge Conference a Lay Leader who shall function as the primary lay representative of the laity in that local church and shall have the following responsibilities:
An effective lay leader functions as the primary representative and role model of Christian discipleship and fai\rth lived out in the church and in daily life. The lay leader works with the pastor to fulfill the mission and vision of the congregation.

Spiritual Gifts and Qualifications Helpful for the Job

    • This leader should be a growing Christian disciple who understands that everyone has spiritual gifts and experiences that are vital to the body of Christ (see 1 Corinthians 12). This person benefits from having one or more of these spiritual gifts: compassion, discernment, faith, helping, leadership, and servanthood.
    • This leader should be a living example of one who “loves God and loves neighbor.” It is important for a lay leader to listen well and communicate with people of all ages. This person should show evidence of working well with both clergy and laity and with various teams and task groups.
    • This leader must have the ability to keep a broad view of the separate parts of the congregation and work with the pastor to help align the entire ministry toward the mission of the church.
    • This leader should show interest in connecting the congregation with the community and the world as they participate in the missio Dei…God’s mission to the world through five main charges: the Great Commandment (Matthew 22:37-39) to put love of God and neighbor above all else; the Great Commitment (Matthew 16:24) to embody God’s love individually through spiritual disciplines; the Great Requirement (Micah 6:8) to live God’s love through our actions; and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) to go and take God’s love into the world by making disciples, baptizing, and teaching faithful obedience.

Responsibilities of the Position

    • The lay leader represents the laypeople in the congregation in working with the pastor for the mission and vision of the congregation.
    • The lay leader engages in spiritual practices that build a relationship of attentiveness to God’s will and direction.
    • The lay leader represents the laypeople in the congregation and serves as a role model of Christian discipleship for the congregation.
    • The lay leader works with the pastor and other leaders to launch or strengthen ministries that build discipleship.
    • The lay leader assists in advising the church council about opportunities available and the needs expressed for a more effective lay ministry of the church in the community.
    • The lay leader plans with other leaders in the congregation for celebrating the ministry of laypeople throughout the year and especially on Laity Sunday.
    • The lay leader meets regularly with the pastor to discuss the state of the church and the opportunities for ministry to advance the mission and ministry of the congregation in the community.
    • The lay leader continues to study and train and to develop a growing understanding of the church’s reason for existence and the types of ministry that will most effectively fulfill the church’s mission and that will help strengthen the lay leader’s own work.
    • The lay leader informs the laity of training opportunities provided by the annual conference.
    • Lay leaders are encouraged to become certified lay servants.
    • The lay leader is a member of the charge conference, the church council, the pastor-parish or staff-parish relations committee, the finance committee, and the nominations and leadership development committee.”
Over the past two weeks and moving forward, I will be attending or meeting with our various committees as time and schedules permit. Patricia, myself, Margaret, and Andy – either call each other or email each other with updates; Patricia and I also share to our Pastor, who remains the Pastor on Record. We also want Brad to get the rest needed for a full recovery. Cards and letters are welcome and of course your prayers.

COVID-19

What can we say – it took a nasty turn and our Church, our Community is facing several complex challenges; we are truly in this all together. I know we all care deeply for each other and our community; I’m asking for a strong demonstration of that care and love. Yes, many of us have been vaccinated, we are observing and practicing those social distancing protocols, and that includes wearing face masks. Presently our county is in a high critical infections stage; which means we are in a Tier 4 Stage from the Conference; unfortunately that means “Indoor Congregational Singing Under Option 2 TIER 4 – Daily new case rate greater than 10, per 100k • No live singing indoors. Soloists and ensemble groups may gather for the safe recording of music to support online or hybrid worship.”
I ask us all to please observe the social distancing protocols, mask up when inside the church and most importantly – if you feel or are aware of a personal exposure – please contact the Church Office (Marian) and myself as soon as possible. There are steps and processes that we will need to take and are necessary for the health and safety of TUMC, but also for our community of Sequim. Thank you and many blessings.   • For those who continue to go through physical struggles, those who are dealing with cancer, or other health situations. For those who are emotionally feeling lost and alone.
  • For those who haven’t been vaccinated yet; for all those who are ill from the Covid-19 virus; for those families who have lost loved ones to the virus; and for essential workers.
  • For peace in our country.
  • For Katherine Parker, missionary to Nepal.
While Pastor Brad is on vacation there will be no weekly pastor’s letter or printed sermons.

Free Youth Mental Health First Aid Classes for Clallam County Residents

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a nationally recognized certification course that will teach you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness, substance abuse disorders, and challenges that youth face in our community. Classes were made possible through grant funding from Clallam County Health and Human Services.
Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainings: 9:00 am-2:30 pm, Aug. 31, Sept. 18, or Nov. 17. 2.0 hrs. of online pre-work must be completed before the 4.5 hr. in-person training date. An excellent program for parents, grandparents, and people who work with youth.

Recycle Empty Inkjet and Laser Printer Cartridges

The recycle container for empty inkjet and laser printer cartridges and used cell phones is now in the church office. Besides helping the environment by recycling, the church is paid for every item donated. Thanks so much for your continued (or new) participation in this program!

Note from Lay Leader, Jim Stoffer

Dear good and faithful Stewards of TUMC.

I received this message from Rene Nadon, Scoutmaster for Troop 90; our Scout Troop. Rene is also a close and personal friend. I have his and the family of Emerson Ake permissions to share this message out.

With all that we (TUMC) are navigating through right now, this causes me to pause and say to myself, this right here is the most important thing for me today. Today’s Upper Room thought tells us that “Today I will seek to imitate the love of Christ.” The prayer provides that foundation. Heavenly Father, thank you for the example of Christ’s sacrificial love. Help us to imitate his love in our attitude and actions. Amen

“I have been fortunate in my life to have been healthy. As I get older, I thank God for my health, my family, friends and Troop 90.
 Recently, I found out that one of the Scouts from Troop 90 has been diagnosed with leukemia. 
 Emerson Ake, who is 13 years old, has been with the Troop since May of this year. He and his family moved to Sequim, WA just recently. Now he is fighting leukemia in a strange place with only his mom being able to see him. Covid restrictions prevent his siblings and the rest of his family to visit him except through Facetime.
 He is currently at Seattle Children’s Hospital. He will be in the hospital for the next month and then will need to be in the Seattle area for the following 10 months to be monitored.
 I am asking all my friends to please keep Emerson and his family in your prayers. During this stressful time, Emerson and his family support team need the strength of God’s love and he will receive that love through your prayers.

This Sunday We Welcome Guest Preacher, Joey Olson

Rev. Joey Olson retired from the Port Angeles UMC in 2014 and has been a part of Trinity since then. She has served churches in Texas, Ocean Shores, Mill Creek and as District Superintendent for the Inland District. Joey and her husband Ole, in their blended family, have two daughters and two sons along with nine grandchildren. She enjoys reading, hiking, kayaking and traveling.

We are blessed to have Joey sharing the message with us again this Sunday.

Some Concerns that we have:

  • Pastor Brad and Dorothy for Brad’s health issues.
  • For those who continue to go through physical struggles, those who are dealing with cancer, or other health situations.
  • For those who are emotionally feeling lost and alone.
  • For those who haven’t been vaccinated yet; for all those who are ill from the Covid-19 virus; for those families who have lost loved ones to the virus; and for essential workers.
  • For peace in our country.
  • For Katherine Parker, missionary to Nepal.

While Pastor Brad is on vacation there will be no weekly pastor’s letter or printed sermons.

A memorial for Florence Berneking will be held on Saturday, August 7, 3 pm at Peninsula Evangelical Friends Church, 1291 N. Barr Road (on Old Olympic Highway in Agnew).

Disciple Bible Study

Are you interested in a Bible study that offers more than “bring your own Bible?” Retired Pastor Joey Olson is offering a course for beginners and “old-timers” alike. Disciple Bible Study is designed for those who want a small-group experience with a chance to delve into the text. Resource materials include a study book and a video to supplement your learning. Those who wish they knew more about the Bible will find a friend in this course. The cost of the book (from Cokesbury) is $32. I also found it from Amazon for about $10. (Scholarships available for the book.) The class will be “Into the Word, Into the World” which will cover Genesis/ Exodus and Luke/ Acts. The beginning session (day and time to be decided) will be 8 weeks. Please email Joey at joeywolson@gmail.com for questions or concerns. I will be holding a meeting for inquirers about the class immediately after church on August 22nd. If you are not sure the class is for you, this meeting might help.

COVID-19 Update Reminder

There has been a significant spike in COVID Cases in our community and across the state. With love and care for all our members and with an abundance of caution with our Community of Sequim, TUMC COVID protocols remain as before. I have 3 asks as we continue to navigate through the complexity of COVID; I ask these not only for the health and safety of our Church, but also in collaboration and partnership with our Community of Sequim. Our Choir Members will mask up when not actually singing. Others with speaking parts during the Service will also mask up when not speaking; and here is a big ask – because we as a Church Family have a strong desire to clump together and share our love, please observe social distancing protocols as much as possible, and when asked to move about, please do so.

Back to School Supplies: Stuff the Bus

— is scheduled for this coming Friday, August 6th, 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. at the Sequim Office Depot. If you would like to donate supplies, you may drop them off at Stuff the Bus or at one of several collection bins located around town, including at the Boys & Girls Club.

Home Maintenance Funds Available

TUMC Missions Ministry has limited funds available to help folks at church and others in our community with necessary home maintenance projects. This might include basic home repairs, yard cleanup, ramps, grab bars, and other in-home needs. One household could receive one grant per year with a maximum limit of up to $500. Confidential requests will go through Lois’s Legacy. Contact Senior Ministries Office 360-683-4307 for further information.

Do you have compassion for families that have lost loved ones?

The Memorial Committee needs help decorating the fellowship hall before a memorial service, help to prepare plates of food (when we can have food), cookie bakers, and help to return tablecloths to storage. E-mail Diane Davis at 03merlot194@gmail.com or call at 360-461-6833 to volunteer.

Finance Committee Request

As the song goes, “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy . . .” but your church doesn’t take a vacation! For the first time this year, the Finance Committee is a bit concerned about TUMC’s financial health. If you have been away, or have forgotten about your monthly contribution, it would be appreciated if you can put it in the collection plate at the back of the sanctuary during the worship service, mail your check to the church, or drop your offering by the church during office hours. 2021 Back to School Fair – August 28th

This event will take place on Saturday, August 28th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. School supplies will be pre-packaged and distributed in a drive-through format which will begin at the high school stadium parking lot on West Fir St. Volunteers are needed to help direct traffic, backpack distribution, supply sack preparation, supply sack distribution, registration, “other” or “wherever needed”. You can choose time slots that work best for you. Several people from Trinity UMC have helped with this event in the past. Free Youth Mental Health First Aid Classes for Clallam County Residents

Youth Mental Health First Aid is a nationally recognized certification course that will teach you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness, substance abuse disorders and challenges that youth face in our community. Classes made possible through grant funding from Clallam County Health and Human Services.

Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainings: 9:00 am-2:30 pm, Aug. 31, Sept. 18 or Nov. 17
2.0 hrs. of online pre-work must be completed before the 4.5 hr. in-person training date.

Virtual Adult Mental Health First Aid Training

Peninsula Behavioral Health has been awarded a grant from Clallam County Health and Human Services to offer the training free to participants that live or work in Clallam County.
If you live or work outside of Clallam County, the cost for the training is $75.00 per person; credit cards are accepted. Training is October 13, 2021 @9:00am – 4:00pm (PST).

We will be cutting grass, doing light maintenance and upkeep, some summertime work, and of course having a cup of coffee and light eats. All are welcome! Recycle Empty Inkjet and Laser Printer Cartridges

The recycle container for empty inkjet and laser printer cartridges and used cell phones is now in the church office. Besides helping the environment by recycling, the church is paid for every item donated. Thanks so much for your continued (or new) participation in this program!

Notes from the Lay Leader

Greetings Church Family and Friends,

Though most probably have heard or least have seen me out and about, I thought it best to provide a brief update of the happenings of our Church. While Pastor Brad is on vacation our Church continues in our mission and outreach both inside the Church and in our Community.

So, who is “in Charge?” I, as your Lay Leader, am responsible for the day-to-day operations that can be handled by lay leadership. Margaret Cox, our Ad Council Chair, provides guidance to the Ad Council; Andy Pitts, our Trustee Chair, oversees the management of the Church Building and property items; and Patricia Guthrie, our SPRC Chair, has the helm of all personnel issues. The four of us are in daily contact, either by phone or email; we can be reached via our contact info as listed in the Leadership Directory; mine is also listed below. While on vacation, Brad is the Pastor of Record, Rev. Joey Olson, with assistance from Kathleen Charters, our Parish Nurse, will be covering pastoral care. Any emergency while Brad or Joey are away, then our District Superintendent, Mark Galang, will be contacted. Other than mailed cards, Patricia will be the only one communicating with Pastor Brad via email or phone while he is on vacation.

Please know, Church family and friends, that our committees are meeting and are hard at work; soon the Nomination Committee will complete their recommendations for Church Leadership, Trustees have been holding their TLC Work Parties, Ad Council, Finance, Mission, Membership, Sight & Sound, Decorating, even the Kitchen Committee. I thank all these good stewards of Trinity who are keeping us focused on our mission as Trinity United Methodist Church of Sequim.

COVID-19 Update – There has been a significant spike in COVID-19 Cases in our community and across the state. With love and care for all our members and with an abundance of caution with our Community of Sequim, TUMC COVID protocols remain as before. I myself will wear my mask in public for three reasons even though I am fully vaccinated: 1. Humility; I don’t know if I have COVID as it is clear that people can spread the disease before they have symptoms. 2. Kindness; I don’t know if the person I am near has a child battling cancer, or cares for their elderly parents or neighbors. While I might be fine, they might not be. 3. Community; I want my community, my church, to thrive, businesses to stay open, employees to stay healthy, schools to open, our kids to be safe. Keeping a lid on COVID helps us all! Thank you for your grace, patience, and understanding.

Lastly, I want to thank Fr. Bob Rhoads for his message last week on the “Prodigal Brother” and thank you again for joining us today.

Prayer – Loving God, we look to you each day for your unfailing strength, love, and grace. In all circumstances, your presence is our blessing, your strength, our salvation. Thank you, Lord, Amen.

This Sunday we again welcome Father Bob Rhoads as guest preacher. He was ordained in 1979 and served parishes in California and Washington. He was the Rector of St Luke’s Episcopal Church in Sequim for 17 years. And he has been a member of a Franciscan community, the community of Francis and Clare, since 2014. He is married with three daughters and seven grandchildren.

Trinity UMC has the student books and the DVD, so there is no additional expense.
