“Stay with Us,” Sermon Outline, April 22, 2023

Focus verse: 29But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So he went in to stay with them.  (Luke 24:29)

  • ENCOUNTER
    1. Christ with us – Close encounters of the Resurrection kind!
    2. What closes the disciples’ eyes to Jesus?
    3. What closes our eyes to Jesus with us?
  • HOSPITALITY
    1. Stay with us: Sacrament of encounter.
    2. Breaking of bread opens their eyes to Jesus’ identity.
    3. Communion: Sacrament where we ask weekly that Jesus “make yourself know to us in the breaking of the bread.”
  • RESPONSE – Part 1
    1. Recognizing Jesus in our mist can transform our community.
    2. The Rabbi’s Gift (M. Scott Peck, M.D., The Different Drum: Community Making and Peace)
  • RESPONSE – Part 2
    1. Ponder and consider.
    2. Encountering Jesus in others.
    3. Encounter brings transformation.

Take action: Share the good news.

While they were talking and discussing,
Jesus himself came near and went with them,
but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

—Luke 24.15-16
